RPG-Lovers Rejoice! Divinity: Original Sin 2 now available for iPad

Big news out of Dublin today, as Larian Studios announced that their ultimate desktop RPG experience, Divinity: Original Sin 2, is now available on iOS for iPad and iPad Pro users!

The team at Larian worked for almost two years with Elverils, a St-Petersburg based development company, to port what can be argued to be one of the greatest RPG experiences of all time over to the iPad.

As someone who spent an ungodly amount of time in the original PC version, this comes as really exciting news, as the turn-based game really does lend itself to the mobile experience in which twitch-like responsiveness from players can be a bit… muted to say the least.

While there may be some disappointment from the ultra-mobile crowd of smartphone users, the thought of playing something as button heavy as Divinity: Original Sin 2 would be a tough sell for any device with the smaller screen real-estate.

Never heard of Divinity: Original Sin 2 before? Think of the most intricate, detailed, story-filled world of any game you’ve ever played, and then times that by 100. The depth of the story is enough to leave you hooked for days on end (this is from experience), and the mechanical side of the game in terms of gameplay and user-experience is top-tier.

Add to that the ability to play with three of your mates for an unparalleled cooperative experience, the option to use built-in touch interface, a connected Bluetooth controller, or even the trust mouse and keyboard, and you’ve got yourself an adventure.

Oh, and there’s split-screen available on one device that supports gamepads, although I can’t really imagine having enough screen space to be able to make that very workable. Knowing Larian though, they’ve done what they can to make sure it’s a perfectly playable experience.

Jump into splitscreen in DOS2!

So which devices can users load up DOS2 and jump into the magical world of Rivellon on? Check below to see if you own one of the required iPad models:

  • iPad Pro 11 (2021)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (2021)
  • iPad Air (2020)
  • iPad Pro 11 (2020)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (2020)
  • iPad Pro 11 (2018)
  • iPad Pro 12.9 (2018)

According to the App Store, the game will also eat up 18GB of data, so keep that in mind that you may need to free up some space on your device. Confusingly though, if you check the Information section lower on the page, the Size is listed as 1.8 GB. My guess is that the game is indeed 18 GB, given the size of the original.

Fane may just be the sassiest character in all of Rivellon

Now, with over 100 hours of gameplay, this all sounds like the perfect way to hide from the world on the couch for the coming weeks, but what is this incredible experience going to cost, you might be asking? It drops in at a very reasonable $24.99, with no micro-transactions, and a bunch of included DLC. While this might seem higher than the usual mobile game, Larian’s objective is to “release a truly mobile version with a gameplay experience that exceeds or mirrors consoles & PC”.
